Lesson 1503 – Find the Puppy

It’s been been almost 10 months (!) since Dalai (aka Dolly) joined our family. Even though Pippin puts up with her (no more territorial growling between the two), there are still moments of jealousy.

Each morning when I come downstairs I greet my pups and give them each nice, long ear and belly rubs. I then spend some quality time cuddling.

This morning Pippin carefully guarded my lap from Dalai’s even entertaining the thought of jumping up to join us.

Once the first born, always the first born.

Lesson 1331 – Best advice for fighting a stubborn cold – what I ended up doing

I’m still struggling with a deep lingering cough. Last night I had my first good sleep because I did some of the suggestions that my friends gave me for fighting a stubborn cold.  My cough had gotten to the point where I had to carry a bucket with me in case I vomited (if you’ve ever been there you know what I mean.) My chest was painful, my head hurt from all the coughing, it was getting bad. So this is what I did.

Took a tablespoon of honey (which calmed the cough enough for me to)

Drink 32 ounces of water

Another tablespoon of honey

Another 32 ounces of water

Cup of hot tea

Cup of hot water with Emergen-C

Then I went to bed.

Note: pretty soon Pippin will be going in for a haircut (shave) after which we might have to play a few editions of Find the Wet Rat. (you’ll see)

Have a great weekend, enjoy the fall weather, and for all my young readers, please be safe out there.

Lesson 1329 – E.B. White’s connection to the flock

I was looking for a book last night and although I never found that book, I did find this one. My mother had asked her sister’s husband (my Uncle Brit) to clarify our family’s relationship to E.B. White.

This book was mailed to me right before I had some knee surgery and got lost. I’d always known that E.B. White was my Great-Uncle (although that “Uncle Andy” part threw me) and finally, here is how. Continue reading

Lesson 1328 – Best advice for fighting a stubborn cold

Weeks of stuffy, running noses and coughs from all the mucous. Not getting much sleep.

20151028_121143_001I’ve asked my students and friends about this and they’ve all reported stories of the never ending cold in their households. It’s here and it’s not going away.

I asked my Facebook friends what their best suggestions for knocking down a persistent cold once and for all were. Here are the replies: (Do yourself a favor and bookmark this page, trust me, at some point this winter, you’re going to need it.)

R.R.– neti pot, lots of warm lemon juice, sleep

I use about a half a tsp of 50% baking soda/%50 sea salt dissolved in fresh filtered tap water for my neti. Continue reading

Lesson 1327 – Find the Puppy

If you’ve been following this blog, you know that Pippin, my faithful little Maltese is also my writing buddy. If I’m in my office, he’s in his chair (it used to be my reading chair) enjoying the comforts of a heating pad and various blankets. Sometimes it’s difficult to see where the blankets end and where Pip begins.

When you combine that observations with a big ol’ case of “I don’t want to start that writing project today” you end up inventing the new, time wasting game for procrastinators called “Find the Puppy.”

Luckily for all of us, Pippin is a tremendously good sport. Find the puppy. Continue reading
