One Hour or Die – One hour of exercise a DAY to maintain weight – update

Here it is April 23 and I’m still going to the gym to exercise for one hour every day. This because of a study published by the American Medical Association stating that middle aged women need to exercise moderately for one hour EVERY day in order to maintain their weight.

This week I somehow managed to increase my weight 1.4 pounds. (This despite the fact that no one will go near me when I come home from the gym due to the buckets of yuky sweat on my clothing.) I blame this increase in part due to I-thought-I’d-ordered-a-healthy-thing-but-it-was-far-from-it Portobello Quesada dinner followed up by a family dinner at an all you can eat buffet with the kids to close out our Portion Plates challenge.

Just a little too much cheese and salt for any amount of exercise to overcome.

Total for the month stands at -2.6 pounds.

I’m getting used to going to the gym each day although the thought of having to do this everyday for the rest of my life simply depresses me. I’d like it much better if the study had said I could go 5 out of 7 days, a little bit of wiggle-room goes a long way in creating happiness.

Actually I’d like it even better if the study said that if I wished really, really hard on a star, I wouldn’t have to exercise ever again and I’d still have the UCONN track and distance body I had in my youth.

Sigh. Ain’t gonna happen in this lifetime.

One good thing that has come out of going to the gym and doing an hour of moderate exercise is this, my pants and skirts are definitely fitting a bit better these days and I’m starting to see some muscle structure in my arms for the first time in decades. You can also actually tell that there are some muscles on my legs. It’s good to see some of these old friends again.

Oh, and another good thing is that I’m definitely getting caught up on all the past episodes of my favorite bad boy show, Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations. Anthony has a way of making even the most interminable agonizing amounts of time (like walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes) – bearable.

  1. Just remember: muscle weighs more than fat. I truly believe we shouldn’t focus on what we weigh, but how fit we are. (Now if I only had the commitment gene that you appear to have…)

      I have to admit that my clothes are fitting better even though there is not much weight loss. It just might be that muscle thing they always talk about (and of which I admit, I have very little experience)

      Making a public challenge goes a long way toward being consistent to a commitment. For example, it’s now 6:59 EST. Dinner’s been served, the kids are relaxing and talking about what movie to watch (it’s school vacation) and I haven’t gone to the gym yet. So instead of watching a movie, I’m going to be busting my butt tonight.

      Why?

      Because I can’t bear the thought of showing up here tomorrow and admitting to all that I failed.

      Sometimes public shame can be a very good thing. 🙂
