Update on Trevor’s Nose Surgery

Last week my son, Trevor had his second nose operation as a result of gymnastics’ vault landing gone wild. There are pictures of him before and after surgery here. (be ready to have your heart broken, mine was)

Today is Thursday. It has been one week, 7 days after his surgery. He no longer wears the bandage under his nose full time and the facial swelling has significantly decreased.

The operation was different this time. We had a different Dr. who didn’t just re-break the nose (not an effective method and far too subjective). Instead, this Dr. went in through the interior nostril and completely removed the damaged septum. The nose now just “falls straight” from the top to the bottom. I know, it sounds a bit odd but people swear by this procedure.

He came downstairs this morning all excited to show me that he can partially breathe through both sides of his nose. There is still interior swelling and discharge and once those go away he should be able to breathe even better.

He is also saying that he can smell things again.

Trevor one week post nose surgery and smiling again.

This is an incredible accomplishment. The kid has not been able to breathe out of his nose or smell anything for the last 2 years. Imagine being fourteen years old and not able to smell the flowers from an apple tree or a mint leaf crushed in your hand.
